HYMNS FOR THE JOURNEY
AN INVITATION
 : Like a journey, the season of Lent begins and ends in vastly different places. From Ash Wednesday to Easter’s doorstep, it tracks along the rugged and narrow path of discipleship through the garden of abandonment to what would seem to be the dead end of the tomb were it not for God’s knack for surprise endings. And we are called to follow.

Pack lightly. Your possessions will only burden you and your every need will be provided. You already possess your most precious resources: Faith, Trust, God’s Word, and the Hymns You Know By Heart. This blog features a few of those hymns. Stories of meaning and reflection written by you and for you.

Each week, we will bring you a new hymn to discover again in a unique way as it relates to a fellow pilgrim. What hymns speak to you?

Pastor's Paragraph 2/14/19

Pastor’s Paragraph — February 14, 2019

My days of being your pastor are rapidly drawing to a close.  We have two more Sundays to worship our Lord together.  This coming Sunday’s (February 17) worship service will include the baptisms of seven new Christians!  My sermon (which is based on Numbers 13:1-3, 17-33; 14:1-4) is entitled “Where Do We Go From Here?”  On February 24, I will be preaching my final sermon as your pastor.  Taken from Philippians 1:3-6, the working title of this message is “Thank You, I’ll Remember You, God be with You.”

In coming days, I will continue to express my thanks to God and to you (my CBC family) for the opportunity and privilege of being the pastor of such an extraordinary church for these past 27 1/2 years.  For now, I want to thank you for all the many birthday greetings and messages that I received this past Sunday which was my 66th birthday.  Being able to worship God with you on my birthday #66 was a gift that I will always treasure.

I look forward to worshipping with you the next two Sundays.  May God bless each of you during this time of transition!

Blessings from your grateful pastor,
Bob

Transition Team Announcement 1/31/19

The Transition Team has posted a 1/31/19 update that can be found on the Transition Information page. You can read the update below as well.

Transition Team Update 1-31-19

Here is a list of the Transition Team’s immediate and long-term goals. We are well on the way of getting a short-term Interim Pastor in place and moving on to the next step. Check in for additional updates on our link on the church website. Thank you for your prayers and support!

I. Short-term Interim Pastor and Pulpit Supply - March 3- May 26 (Memorial Day weekend):

Pulpit Speaker – 8:30 and 11:00 service each Sunday

The Transition Team believes that a consistent presence in the pulpit to lead the church after Bob’s final Sunday and through the Lenten season and Easter is needed.

A short term Interim Pastor will preach at two services each Sunday morning with no other pastoral duties except preaching on Sunday. (The college services will continue with Niki Hays leading until classes conclude in the summer as usual.) The Transition Team has a “deep bench” of substitute speakers in addition to staff to fill in on any Sunday the short-term interim might have a conflict.

II. Options for Creation of Congregational Profile and New Pastor Profile Documents:

The Transition Team has begun assembling data about our church and community that need to be in a congregational profile. We still need input from the church, and think that large-scale congregational conversations and surveys need to be done in order to complete the creation of a profile that reflects who we are, and who we are looking for.

Once we secure our short-term interim pastor, the Transition Team sees completion of these documents as its next task.

Options we are considering:

                1. No outside facilitator/drafter - Calvary does it on its own. There are a lot of resources available for churches wishing to undertake this project internally.

                2. Hire outside facilitator/drafter with experience with churches which have undergone a transition or leadership search.

III. Long-term Interim Pastor

After Memorial Day weekend, the Transition Team will again need to have preaching lined up for the open-ended time between then and the ultimate call of a pastor. If the short-term interim pastor has been successful, and is interested in continuing, the Team may request an extension of the original commitment, but the Transition Team is also scouting out other possible interim candidates to serve the church going forward during this time.

Transition Team Information from 1/6/19 Worship Bulletin Insert: As the last days of Dr. Baker’s ministry at Calvary approach, the Transition Team is ready to ask for the church’s approval for hiring someone to fill the pulpit in the interim as a Transition Pastor and Congregational Coach.  The Team has been in conversation with Dr. Bill Owen since last November.  We invited him to speak on November 25 in our two worship services and many of you were present to hear him speak.  If you were unable to hear him on November 25, you will find a video of his sermon, “A Snapshot of Courage,” by visiting Calvary’s website, www.calvarybaptistchurch.com/sermons or go to the direct link to the video, https://youtu.be/_A9Vp-VlfKl .

 As Transition Pastor, Dr. Owen, a retired pastor with 40 years’ experience in ministry, would preach three Sundays a month at both the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship hours.  In addition he would be on site two other days a month to meet with the staff, assist with worship planning, and help with other ministerial duties as needed. As Congregational Coach, Dr. Owen would guide the congregation in a process of Spiritual Discernment called “40 Days of Prayer.”  In addition he would work with the Transition Team to plan and facilitate several congregational discussions and small group meetings, evaluate written questionnaires, as well as visit Sunday School Classes.   The information collected from the members of the congregation would lead to the development of the  Congregational Profile and Next Pastor Profile. The profile information collected would be given to the future Pulpit Committee to use in selecting the new Senior Pastor. Dr. Owen explains, "I enjoy transition/interim pastoral leadership and preaching, coming alongside churches in the development of direction and identity through a healthy, strength-based congregational process.”

 Three Important Dates:

Tuesday, January 15, 2019, 6:00 p.m. – Presentation of Dr. Owen to the Deacon Board with a time of Question and Answer, and a vote on whether to recommend Dr. Owen as Transition Pastor/Congregational Coach to the Congregation.

Pastor's Paragraph 1/10/19

Pastor’s Paragraph—January 10, 2019

Happy New Year! It was good to be back in the pulpit last Sunday (the first Sunday of 2019) after enjoying an after-Christmas break with family and friends. (And yes, my break certainly did include spending time with Baxter, Oliver, Annie, and Will – our four grandchildren!)

I trust that you had good Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. Some of my favorite holiday experiences included:

1.       The “Many Moods of Christmas” musical presentation by our outstanding Sanctuary Choir;

2.       The Calvary Christmas Project through which our church was able to share the good news of Christ and Christmas with 130 families including approximately 400 children;

3.       Welcoming to Calvary and to Lexington Niki Hays (our new Minister of College Students and Young Adults) and her family- Ryan, Ryder, and Karis;

4.       Baptizing nine new Christians on the Sunday morning (Dec. 23) prior to Christmas;

5.       Serving Communion and Lighting the Christ Candle during my last Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion service as your pastor.

Even as we reflect upon the experiences and blessings of 2018, we look forward to the New Year that is before us. Indeed, 2019 will be a year of change and transition for our church. Consider:

1.       I will be retiring from the pastorate at the end of February after being blessed to have been the pastor of Calvary for the past 27 1/2 years;

2.       Marilyn Fightmaster, who recently announced her retirement as our church pianist, will conclude her extraordinary piano ministry with us having served our church in this capacity for the past 47 years; (We will honor Marilyn with a reception tea and program on Sunday, January 27, beginning at 2:00 p.m.)

3.       Our church will begin the search for our new pastor – a search process that will be facilitated through the prayerful recommendations of our Transition Team, through the ministry of a transition/interim pastor (who will be approved by the church), through the work of a nine person pastor search committee (to be recommended by our Nominating Committee and approved by the church) and ultimately through the recommendation of a candidate to be called to be our new pastor – a recommendation from the Pastor Search Committee that  will be “voted on” by the membership of our church.

Let me suggest three ways that each CBC member can support our church during this upcoming time of transition:

1.       Resolve to pray for our church every day and then do it! Pray that we will be open to the guidance of God as we search for a new pastor. Pray that the Lord will work through our Transition Team, our Nominating Committee, and our future Pastor Search Committee in leading us to the person He desires to be our next pastor.

2.       Be faithful in your church attendance, and in the generous giving of your time, talents, and financial resources.

3.       Take special notice of the Transition Information that is included elsewhere in this newsletter. Be especially mindful of three very important upcoming dates (January 15, 16, and 20) when our church will have the opportunity to learn more about  Dr. Bill Owen whom our Transition Team is recommending that our church call to be our Interim/Transitional Pastor.

In the midst of the changes and transitions which CBC will experience in this new year, let me encourage you to rely on our always faithful Lord Whose unconditional and steadfast love for us NEVER CHANGES – Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8) !

Blessed to be your pastor,
Bob
